In an effort to provide students with a more convenient method for taking courses, a limited number of Administration of Justice Studies courses have been made available over the Internet and additional courses will be added in the future.
Currently, three courses are available on the Internet. They are:
- AJS216 Criminalistics: Biological Evidence (Click here for information) Not Available Until Next Fall
- AJS219 Criminalistics: Physical Evidence (Click here for information) Register NOW for Summer Session
- AJS275 Criminal Investigation (Click here for information) Register NOW for Summer Session
Future planned Internet courses include new courses in Domestic Violence and Forensic Pathology (Death Investigation).
In Administration of Justice Studies Internet-based courses you do almost all of the work yourself and at your own pace. Reading assignments and instructions are contained on each individual Internet course's special website. Basically, for each course lesson you will do the following:
1. Read the appropriate textbook reading assignment for each lesson.
2. Enhance the textbook reading assignment with additional
supplemental readings,
slide shows, plus an occasional web search
task.
3. Ask questions of the instructor either by email or by phone. (Read
the "How do I
contact the instructor?" section
below.)
4. Take an open book test for each lesson on the course
website, after you have
finished
that lesson's reading and
supplemental assignments.
5. Take a proctored final examination, which is NOT open book,
at the end of the
course. This exam insures that you
have mastered the material. You may take the
exam at the Scottsdale Community College
Test Center or elsewhere, if you have
a disability or live too far away.
You have 16 weeks to finish a Spring or Fall semester course and 8 weeks for a summer semester course, although you may finish sooner. Extensions beyond the allocated time may be granted for cause. You should contact the instructor as soon as any problems develop that may delay completion.
The textbook for the course is selected by the instructor. Additional handouts, if included, will be mailed to you at no additional charge.
You can purchase this book several ways:
1. Go to the SCC Campus Bookstore located in the Student
Center Building at our
campus at 9000 East Chaparral Road,
Scottsdale, Arizona 85256. (Near the
intersection of Route 101 and
Chaparral Road.) You can call (480) 423-6554 to
confirm their hours of operation and
book availability. Note that the bookstore
may have used copies available at a
lower cost.
2. Order it new online from any of a number of publisher or bookstore websites.
3. Try a local bookstore.
You will need to contact the instructor for an initial orientation talk and then to ask procedural and course content questions as they arise. You can contact your instructor in any of five ways:
1. The easiest way to contact the instructor is by email.
Just click the button marked
" Contact Instructor" located at the top of many pages
on the course website.
Alternately, you can
email him or her using your own Internet access
provider at
his or her email address. Email is best for quick
questions that do not require a
lengthy response.
2. You can also phone your instructor during his office
hours. If you call outside of office
hours, leave a message and include a return phone number. Phone
contact is preferred
for more involved questions.
3. You can mail items to your instructor at the
Administration of Justice Studies Program,
Scottsdale Community
College, 9000 East Chaparral Road, Scottsdale, Arizona 85256.
5. Stop into his or her office during office hours, unless the instructor is an adjunct.
Your grade will be based on your scores on each of the eight end-of-chapter tests and the final exam. The grading breakdown is as follows:
Each end-of-chapter test (open book)...... 60 % of final grade
Final examination (closed book)............. 40 % of final grade
Some instructors may modify the grading procedure to add
project grades or extra credit opportunities.
Some courses may have field trips. Field trips are optional.
The first thing you must do is contact the instructor. The instructor will make sure that you understand the course rules and procedures and tell you how to access the course website and begin. Phone contact is preferred for the initial set-up discussion, subsequent contacts may be by email, phone, or other means, including stopping into the office for those who live nearby.
