Required Text:  Seeing Through Statistics, Jessica M. Utts, 2nd Edition

Prerequisites:  The stated prerequisite (MAT 114, 117 or equivalent) indicates that some prior acquaintance with quantitative thinking is important.  But the essential prerequisites are your willingness to read the textbook critically, to locate additional sources of material, and to participate freely in class discussions.

Material:  Some material will be presented in lecture that is not covered in the book, and some material in the text will not be presented in lecture.  You are responsible for the content of all lectures and all assigned reading.

Calculators:  A calculator that will add, subtract, multiply, divide, square and take square roots is required for the course.  You will be allowed to use a calculator on all exams and quizzes.  Your calculator may only be used to assist in mathematical computations. Using any device to store or access other information (such as textual notes) will be treated as academic dishonesty.

Homework:  Homework will be assigned and collected regularly at the beginning of class.   Students may work together on homework, but each individual student is required to write up and turn in their own work.  Homework that does not meet all of the following requirements will not be graded.

Requirements:   1. Neatly written or typed
2. All pages must be stapled (not folded) together.
3. No jagged/torn edges.
4. All work shown

Quizzes:  Quizzes are given at the discretion of the instructor and will cover recent material from the textbook and/or lectures.  All quizzes will be closed-book and closed-notes.

Group Projects:  You will be assigned to groups for several Projects throughout the semester.  Some class time will be allotted for organization of these projects, but time will need to be coordinated outside of class.  You will be graded on a short 10-minute presentation in class and a detailed write-up of your findings.

Notes on Grading:  Absolutely no late homework or projects will be accepted.  There will be no make-ups for quizzes or in-class assignments.  No grades will be dropped.  Make-ups for the Midterm Exam will be given at the discretion of the instructor and only in the case of verified medical or other documented emergencies.  If you are unable to take the Midterm Exam, the instructor must be notified before the test is given.  There will be no make-ups given for the final exam, and no finals will be rescheduled for personal reasons, such as nonrefundable airplane tickets.

I reserve the right to alter this information at any time.

These changes will be announced in class.
