1) Baloney Detection and the Tools of Science Due first week of classes.
Due the second week of classes. We will be discussion this in class, so please read it before the fourth lecture (scientific communication). If you have difficulty opening this article (access is restricted to individuals or libraries with subscriptions to Science), you can make a copy from the issue in the SCC library.
This paper is not required but will help with the interpretation of the previous one. Access to this article is also restricted, but SCC has a subscription, so you can get it through the SCC library.
This is a short primer on the basic notions from probability that we will use in both lecture and lab.
This handout, originally given to students in the first lab, summarizes scientific notation.
6) Basic Statistics Every Scientist Should Know This handout, which comes from an applied statistics text I'm preparing with Rob Cutler of Bard College and Kim Cooper of Midwestern University, Glendale, introduces basic summary statistics, including mean, variance, standard deviation, as well as some inferential tools like standard error of the mean and confidence intervals.
