Revised 4/17/08

Assignment, given on April 3, due April 17:

   1) Download WinPP. (Easiest to do from here.) After you download it, extract the files all into the same location--I usually put it in "Program Files." Then you can either launch the program by double-clicking the icon "WinPP.exe" or--this is what I do--place a pointer to that file on your desktop. The assignment sheets (described below) assume that that's what you've done. If you use a Mac or Linux OS, go to the XPP website and download XPP. It's native on UNIX, so you can run it on a Mac under X11.

    2) Go to the "Data" page and download the model file and protocol for your project. (See project assignments below.)

    3) Use WinPP to analyze your model as described in the protocol.

We will use the same teams as last time. Here are the assignments:

Teams:

1) Dina, Jessica, Chad

An alarming new cancer (project #1)

2) Michael, David

    Mutant glycolysis (project #3)

3) Gayle, Ian

Outbreak of a new strain of HIV (project #4)

Assignment, given on March 6, due March 20:

I am assigning teams (listed below) to work on a particular task. Each team will be given a (real) data set and asked to analyze and draw conclusions from it. Results will be presented to the group by each team. (NOTE: All data sets were obtained from the R package, ISwR, and are freely available on the web from the R website.)

Teams:

1) Dina, Jessica, Chad

    Data set: Vital Capacity (vitcap2)

    Description of data

2) Michael, David

    Data set: Malaria

    Description of data

3) Gayle, Ian

Data set: Obesity and blood pressure (bp.obese)

    Description of data

Clarification of assignments for Feb. 7 and 14:

OK, apparently the previous post wasn't as clear as it could have been, given that a number of people have stopped by to ask about it. Sorry about that. Here's a second attempt:

Thursday, Feb. 7: We will finish our discussion of the NAS booklet. Therefore, you have nothing to prepare for this meeting unless you still need to finish reading that booklet.

Thursday, Feb. 14 (Happy Valentine's Day): Read and be prepared to discuss the handout (that I will pass out on Feb. 7) on U. of M.'s Cellular and Molecular Biology Graduate Program. Also, find an equivalent handbook for the post-graduate program of your choice, and be prepared to compare and contrast your program to U. of M.'s.

CHANGE TO SYLLABUS

The syllabus says that we should be reading papers by Gardner et al. and Marzouki et al. this week. Given the extended discussion that we've had on the National Academy booklet, we will continue that discussion next week and not read the Gardner and Marzouki papers this semester. Also, remember that we are starting now 15 minutes earlier than scheduled, so we begin at 3:15 instead of 3:30, when your prof. remembers...
